Historic Schools of Harris County

More than any other type of structure, a school is the true building block of any given community. For the lion's share of residents, the neighborhood school is something that provides cohesion, camaraderie and a place to gather. Longtime Houstonians of all ages cherish memories of their school days, and more recently arrived residents might have their own memories of participating in the school lives of their children. Others might think of the local school as a place to vote, attend civic meetings or play basketball on the weekends. It is only natural that all these people would be interested in knowing more about the venerable institutions that have so impacted their lives.

This multi-volume set, filled with photographs both old and new, will tell the tale of over 500 pre-1950 Harris County school buildings, both extant and not. Primary source research combined with rich oral history told by former students and faculty will go far beyond architectural details to provide a complete human story of these structures which have been the launching pad for many generations of productive Houston and Harris County residents.
